Mt. Kackar and Mt. Ararat combined trekking (13 days)

Kaçkar Mountains are a mountain range that rises above the Black Sea coast in eastern Turkey. The Kackar rise in between the shores of the Black Sea to the north and the River Coruh valley to the south. With highest peak Kaçkar Dağı at an elevation of 3937 metres, it is the highest part of the Pontic Mountains. The Kaçkars are glaciated mountains that are alpine in character, with steep rocky peaks and numerous mountain lakes.
Kackar area is a national park and has an extensive collection of native flora and fauna, including the local bears, mountain goats and many birds. There are many stunning lakes in the area and you can go for a swim.
Kackar Mountains are one of the best trekking sites in Turkey. The best time for trekking is between June and September.

Day 1

Transfer from Erzurum Airport to Barhal Pension. Dinner and overnight in Barhal Pension.

Day 2

Transfer to Naznara. Walk from Naznara via Amanesket to Karagöl lake. Continue to meet the mule and baggage at Satibe Campsite. Diner and camp.

Day 3

Walk from Satibe camp via Sarıbulut, Borasan, Unzunçalı, Binektaşı and Kurdat to Pişenkaya Yaylası. Dinner and camp close to the stream.

Day 4

Walk from Pişenkaya up a narrow valley above the tree line past Okuz Göl Lake to Okuz Geçiti (Bull Pass) and descend the far side to Satelef Yayla (summer village). Dinner and camp above the village close to the stream.

Day 5

Descend the valley past the villages of Körahmet and Karamolla to Yaylalar. Continue up hill past Olgunlar to the base camp for Kaçkar at Dilberdüzü. Dinner and camp at Dilberdüzü.

Day 6

Early start for a summit attempt. Climb to Kaçkar summit and return to base camp. Dinner in camp.

Day 7

After breakfast we will drive to Kars and visit the old Armenian capital of Ani. The Ani ruins are quite well preserved and are one of the highlights of visiting eastern Turkey. Very few people have been to Ani ruins as it is on the border with Armenia and was difficult to Access for many years. After visiting Ani ruins, we will drive to Dogubayazit at the foothills of Mt Ararat. Stay overnight in Dogubayazit.

Day 8

After breakfast in the hotel about 8.00-9.00 a.m. leave unnecessary things locked in storage room, transfer by minibus to starting point at 2200 m on Mount Ararat. Hike (4-5 hours) to the Base camp (3200 m). Horses will carry your big backpacks and camp equipment. You carry your own small backpack with lunch packet. In the camp picnic and dinner. Overnight in camp 1 in tent.

Day 9

After breakfast climb to camp 2 at 4200 m (3-4 hours). Transfer of equipment by horses. In the camp 2 dinner go to sleep early.

Day 10

Wake up at 1-2 a.m., small breakfast, drink coffee or tea. Depart from camp 2 to the top. Climb about 5-9 hours for sunrise. Return to the camp 2, short rest, eat, pack equipment for horses. Return to Base camp for night. (This may also be used as a reserve day if altitude sickness or bad weather requires two nights at camp 2.)

Day 11

After breakfast at Base Camp, pack all equipment for horses and descend to 2200 m, transfer by minibus to the hotel. Short rest. After followed by cultural tours of Ishak Pasa Palace, Meteor Crater, Noah Ark National Park. Return to town for walking and eat dinner. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 12

After breakfast in the hotel transfer to Van and boat trip to Akdamar Island and historic church. Check in to the hotel in Van. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 13

After breakfast in the hotel transfer to Van airport.
